Robin's Sprouting Seeds
Robin's Sprouting Seeds
This blend of various seeds, grains, and legumes have been my (and my hamsters') favorites to sprout. I've been giving fresh sprouts to my hamsters as treats for years now and they've always appreciated the extra boost of nutrition and variety they provide. Not to mention they're super easy to grow-- I've picked the ones that have been the fastest to sprout just for you and your pet(s)!
In addition to being tasty treats, these can also be fully grown into in-enclosure gardens and even sprays given enough time!
Ingredients:
Millet blend (japanese, yellow, red proso, white proso, golden), flax seed, alfalfa seed, clover seed, wheat, lentils, mung beans.
Directions:
Sprouting
Place seeds in a tea strainer. For the first day, let the seeds soak in water. I've found it easiest to set the tea strainer on top of a mug of water for this. After the first day, let the seeds sit in the strainer unsoaked, rinsing twice a day. After a few days you should have a couple sprouts! There are also other methods online, too, this is just what I've always done.
Growing
Treat much like any other plant--place in a container ~6" deep for sprouts and +12" deep for sprays to allow ample room for root growth. Cover the seeds with ~1/2" damp dirt and place in a sunny area. Spray the soil frequently (1-3x a day) to ensure it remains damp. If placed in the cage, be sure the dirt used is safe. Coconut fiber planting soil intended for reptile enclosures has been the best for this in my experience (ex. ExoTerra Plantation Soil). You can also use all-natural potting soil (be sure there are no herbicides or fertilizers added).
