Robin's Basic Hamster Food Mix
Robin's Basic Hamster Food Mix
A basic mix of seeds, grains, and vegetables intended for hamsters. Contains no pellets, artificial colors, added sugars, or preservatives!
If you are looking for the basic mix for Russian Campbell's Dwarf (RCD) hamsters, Djungarian (winter white) dwarf hamsters, or hybrid dwarf hamsters, I have combined all of their nutritional needs into the "Russian" mix. So, if you have one of these species, opt for the "Russian/Chinese" mix.
Due to its lack of animal protein, this food can be shipped internationally and is intended for international customers. If you are in the USA I would recommend purchasing one of my Gourmet or Fortified mixes, which are more complete.
NOTE: THIS FOOD IS NOT HIGH ENOUGH IN PROTEIN TO BE FED ALONE. Adult hamsters need ~18% protein, so you must add in a high-protein supplement. This is especially important for younger hamsters that need closer to 20-22% protein. There are two main ways of doing this: through high-protein pellets (such as Mazuri Rat and Mouse, which is also safe for hamsters, or Sunseed Critter Cubes) or animal proteins (such as 100% freeze-dried chicken cat/dog treats or freeze-dried reptile feeder insects). If you need help with boosting the protein level please do not hesitate to contact me. :)

Feeding Guidelines:
Feed your hamster 10g (about 2 tablespoons) of food every 1-2 days. If your hamster becomes a picky eater, do not give more food until the refused food is gone. If you would like me to create a custom mix without the refused food, don’t hesitate to contact me and we can work something out.
Transition:
Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to transition your hamster to a new mix. They are highly-adapted scavengers that are used to quick changes in diet.
For reference, a hamster will eat about 100-300g every month.
NOTE: Not every micronutrient of this mix was calculated, so there is a possibility some nutritional gaps may be present. However, due to the balanced nature of the mix and lack of malnutrition reports from the nearly 5 years this mix has been sold, the chances of malnutrition are very low. Still, we encourage owners to exercise caution when feeding homemade mixes and do ample research before selecting a mix.
